Building A Metal Ceiling Tile Cornice

A cornice is an architectural element that can bring elegance to so many areas of your structure. Meaning “ledge” in Italian, a cornice is a type of architectural ledge that can be placed around fireplaces or windows, and it is used to create canopies around beds or in unique lounge spaces. Creating a metal ceiling tile cornice is surprisingly easy, and it makes for an excellent weekend DIY project that does not take up too much time on your days off.

How To Create Your Own Metal Ceiling Tile Cornice

In order to build a metal ceiling tile cornice, it is ideal to have your metal ceiling tile installed first when working on the ceiling. In order to cut the cornice panels, use a measuring tape and tin snips in order to get the most precise measurements and cuts. Metal edges will be sharp, so you should use heavy-duty safety gloves when working with metal ceiling tile cornices to avoid any accidents during the installation process. The steps to follow to create your own metal ceiling tile cornice are the following:

  1. Nail the cornice into the furring strips all around the perimeter of your ceiling or where you wish your cornice to be installed. Nailing should be done around every 6 inches into the ceiling and the studs at the bottom of the cornice.
  1. When joining the cornices at the corners of a room or the desired area, miter or cope as you would when working with wood molding.
  1. Caulk the edges of the cornice at the seams to cover any gaps that may be present around the cornice.

A cornice can be used around windows, fireplaces, or ceilings if you wish to create a canopy. These decorative elements can add color, style, texture, and depth to any area of a room, instantly making your interior design more interesting. With the sheer number of options on the market, you have complete control over the look and style of your DIY cornice, allowing for limitless possibilities.
